Virtual Colonoscopy

virtual colonoscopy imagesThe virtual colonoscopy has become a true reality in medicine with advances in Computed Tomography (CT) and Electron Beam Tomography (EBT). It is now possible to graphically image the entire colon without sedatives, excessive discomfort, or truly invasive procedures. The virtual colonoscopy makes colon cancer screening more bearable.

With Spiral CT and EBT scans, a 3-dimensional examination can result in high resolution without the sometimes complicated and often uncomfortable methods frequently encountered in past colonoscopy's.

The procedure does, of course, require cleansing of the bowel before the scan. During x-ray exposure it is also necessary for the bowel to be filled with air for clear imaging. Although slightly uncomfortable and causing a feeling of "fullness" in the abdomen, it is a rapid and generally painless process. 3-D Colonoscopy requires only about ten minutes for the patient on the examining table.

Many physicians and specialists have termed "virtual" exams equally effective in detecting polyps that might prove malignant. Higher resolution and quicker results have also generated favorable comments.

With speed and accuracy prime considerations, the virtual colonoscopy minimizes x-ray exposure and, in fact, its clarity and precision work in concert to help preclude the need for multiple scanning sessions.

Results of the virtual colonoscopy scan will be available to the radiologist immediately following the colonoscopy and are usually made accessible to the patient during discussion. If however, the interview is to be held at a later date and time, results will be on file and available on request. Full color images from the scan can also be made available.
