Carotid Artery Blockage: Detection and Scans. Most often Carotid Doppler and MRI combine with an angiogram for the most effective evaluation of arterial stenosis/occlusion. Blockage is detected in examination of the vascular structure in the neck, along with the jugular veins, the carotid artery is located between the trachea and the SCM muscle and along side that muscle. It is normal to observe regular pulsation in this area and when these race or show irregularity they should be examined. A bruit will indicate blood flow turbulence and possible atherosclerosis. A highly specialized area of internal medicine, radiologists, neurologists and vascular surgeons combine their talents in diagnosis and treatment of carotid artery disease. As more and more advanced technologies emerge, effective and non-invasive procedures for early detection and early treatment are on the near horizon and scanning will provide the critical insight. |
